Obamacare Plans

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) / “Obamacare” plans provide coverage for all pre-existing conditions from day 1, without any lifetime or yearly limits for Essential Health Benefits. If you’re receiving medical care and/or prescriptions for a condition you need the insurance company to pay for, or if you qualify for a low income government subsidy to help pay for your coverage, then an ACA/Obamacare plan is probably your best choice. Remember, even though an ACA/Obamacare plan will cover all pre-existing conditions from day 1, you must satisfy your deductible or copay before the insurance company will pay benefits.

Penalties/Subsidies

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) / “Obamacare” determines who gets subsidies, penalties and exemptions. Which category you fit in will most likely determine which path you take for the 2018 plan year.

  • Advanced Premium Tax Credit (APTC) - provides a subsidy that will pay a portion of the premium for low income households.
  • Cost Sharing Reduction (CSR) - reduces the amount low income households have to pay for deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
  • Tax Penalties - The tax reform bill known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed on 12-20-2017, eliminates the Shared Responsibility Payment tax penalty from the ACA Individual Mandate.

Supplemental Plans

Supplemental plans fill gaps that primary health insurance plans don't cover. Purchasing a primary health plan with a high deductible, then adding a supplemental plan to cover the high deductible can help you save on total premium, while providing immediate coverage for things that would normally be subject to your primary plan deductible.

Trump's Tax Reform Bill

The tax reform bill, known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed on 12-20-2017, eliminates the tax penalty for not purchasing a ACA / "Obamacare" plan. If you purchased a 2018 ACA / "Obamacare" plan in fear that you would receive a tax penalty, now may be the time to look at an affordable alternative. Families that purchase a NON Obamacare plan have typical savings of more than $500 per month.

2018 Plan Grid

What are your options for the 2018 plan year? Aside from an employer plan, Medicaid or Medicare, government, military or tribal plan, your 2018 plan options are an Affordable Care Act (ACA) / "Obamacare" plan or NON Obamacare plan.

  • Affordabe Care Act / "Obamacare" - These plans are compliant with the ACA and have no lifetime or yearly limits for Essential Health Benefits, and cover pre existing conditions from day 1. Very expensive unless you receive low income subsidies.
  • NON ACA / Obamacare - These plans are NOT compliant with the ACA, have maximum limits and do not cover pre-existing conditions. They are an affordable alternative for people that want coverage for unexpected illness or injury, and who cannot afford an Obamacare plan.
